TVR Insurance – Specifically Trackdays
As I write this, the TVRCC has a new preferred Insurer, ie Adrian Flux. However, at present (April 2009) there is no provision for Trackday Insurance within in the scheme. It has been recommended as the best value cover for road going TVRCC members…the majority. But what if you want to take your TVR on track?
Here are some key points you should consider.
1, Separate TD insurance is available but is very specific and very expensive! Last time I checked it worked out £50 per £1000 of cover, per event! Very expensive indeed!!! They work on the basis that general TD accidents will maybe knock off a corner and a few bits and pieces so with some fibre work and a respray you’ll be OK. Therefore the cover is aimed at around £5000 after an excess of about £2000. All well and good, but if you spin and someone hits you side on…or if there is a fire…total loss is obviously a possibility and one that should be carefully considered.
Recommended Insurer – Competition Car Insurance
2, Inclusive TD insurance By this I mean that the TD cover is included with your standard road policy. This is our recommended solution… and for several reasons.
Firstly it will have Total Loss Cover. As the TD is treated as normal use, all the usual policy actions are in force. Including total loss if applicable.
Secondly, your Personal and Third Party Injury cover is in play, so no one can come after you for personal injuries etc.
Thirdly, Duration. The TD cover is for the entire year, you can do as many TDs as you wish.
Next, for Piece of Mind. With all the above your can attend your TD with your major Insurer with the same piece of mind as if you were driving down to Morrissons to buy your pint of milk. Everything is disclosed.
Attending other TDs (including Europe). Both the recommended Insurers include other regulated TDOs (Track Day Organisers) within their cover. The regulatory bodies are FAEO – Federation of Automotive Event Organisers and the ATDO Association of Track Day Organisers. These bodies ensure that the TDOs run safe TDs within set guidelines of Safety, Administration, Track Management, Organisation and have correct Insurance.
Finally Cost. The major TVR Insurers with Inclusive TD cover still have to quote in a commercial manner, so though generally a touch more expensive for annual policy - £30-£50 with a doubling of excess whilst on a TD - with the benefit of TD insurance they are actually VERY competitive. So if you do 3-4 TDs a year, you would be saving a minimum of £1000 whilst having all the above benefits!!!
Recommended TD Inclusive Insurers
A Manning (UK) Ltd
Sunninghill Direct (both have adverts in Sprint, the TVRCC magazine)
Points to note.
Your Insurer may require you to inform them that the car will be on track PRIOR TO THE DATE IN QUESTION. This is just to ensure the increased excess is enforced and is nothing to worry about!
Currently no-one is covering the Nurburgring Nordscleife. Now unless specified in the Policy wording they should not be able to do this as it is a public road, so long as you conform to all normal German regulation including speed limits! However, don’t assume or take our word for it. Check. Both Manning and Sunninghill have both covered the ‘Ring within the last 7-8 years, they may do again.
